Exhaust Fan Cover

You've just finished a weekend of spring cleaning. The shower screen is sparkling, the tiles are gleaming, the vanity is spotless... but you look up, and there it is. The one thing spoiling the view: a yellowed, cracked, and dusty old exhaust fan cover.

It’s a small detail, but it can make a whole room feel a bit dated and grotty. The good news is that replacing it is one of the quickest, cheapest, and most satisfying DIY jobs you can do to give your bathroom an instant facelift.

Why Bother Replacing Your Exhaust Fan Cover?

  • A Fresh, Clean Look: A brilliant white, modern cover instantly makes the ceiling look cleaner and the whole room feel fresher.
  • Get Rid of Brittle Plastic: Over years of exposure to steam and heat, the old plastic can become brittle and crack. A new cover is much more durable.
  • Easier to Clean: Many modern covers have simpler designs that are easier to wipe down and keep free of dust.

How to Replace Your Fan Cover: A 5-Minute DIY Job

This is a fair dinkum easy job you can give a burl yourself. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Safety First! Turn Off the Power

Even though you're likely not touching any wiring, it's always the best practice to be safe. Head to your home's switchboard and turn off the power to the bathroom circuit before you start.

Step 2: Remove the Old Cover

This is the trickiest part, but it's simple once you know how.

  • Gently pull the exhaust fan cover straight down from the ceiling by about 5-10cm.
  • You will feel it resist. Look on the inside of the cover, and you'll see two metal spring clips, one on each side, that are holding it in place.
  • Carefully reach in and squeeze the two sides of one spring clip together. This will release it from its slot in the fan housing.
  • Do the same for the other clip, and the cover will come right off.

Step 3: Give it a Quick Clean-Up Inside

While you've got the cover off, it's the perfect time to use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to gently suck away all the dust and lint that has built up on the fan blades and inside the housing.

Step 4: Measure Up for the New Cover

Before you head to the shops, measure the length and width of your old cover. More importantly, measure the distance between the two points where the spring clips slot into the fan housing. This is the crucial measurement to ensure your new cover will fit. It's often a good idea to just take the old cover with you to match it up perfectly.

Step 5: Pop on the New Cover

This is just the reverse of taking it off. Squeeze the spring clips on your new cover together, insert them into the slots in the fan housing, and gently push the cover up until it sits flush with the ceiling. Turn the power back on, and you're sorted!

When the Problem is More Than Just the Cover

This guide is only for replacing the plastic cover. If you take the old cover off and notice the fan motor is dead, making a horrible rattling noise, or you can see any damaged or dodgy-looking wiring, do not attempt a DIY repair.

Any work on the fan motor or the electrical wiring itself must be done by a licensed electrician. A qualified professional can safely diagnose the issue and replace the entire fan unit if it's needed.
