Suspended Track Lighting: Cable, Rod or Clamp Mounts

The track is on site, the ceiling is open, and the nearest solid fixing is well away from where the first light needs to hang. Now the job is less about which track to buy and more about how to hold it: cable, rod or clamp, and whether a pendant head belongs on the run at all. This guide covers each mounting option for track lighting hanging from a high or open ceiling, plus the pendant heads that go with it.

Choose the Drop: Cable, Rod or Clamp

A hung run is held in one of three ways. A cable drop, a rod drop and a ceiling clamp each hold the rail differently, and Schnap lists all three for 3 circuit track.

The CLA Lighting 3 circuit track cable suspension kit is listed for 4 wire 3 circuit track and comes in black or white. Cable drops are typically the easier option to adjust on site, but check what length of drop each kit gives against your ceiling height before you order.

Where the run needs a fixed drop instead of cables, the CLA Lighting 3 circuit track rod suspension kit in black does that job. Rod kits hold the track at a set height, so measure the drop before you order, not after the rods arrive.

For ceiling mounting rather than a drop, CLA Lighting lists a ceiling kit with spring and a ceiling clamp for the same 4 wire track. The listings name the spring as the difference between them, so read both before you pick.

Mount What the listings say Check before ordering
Cable suspension kit For 4 wire 3 circuit track, black or white, 0.5 kg Drop length against ceiling height
Rod suspension kit A fixed drop in place of cables. CLA Lighting lists a black kit and Domus Lighting lists a 1m steel kit Rod length and the fixing above it
Ceiling kit with spring For 4 wire 3 circuit track, 1.0 kg The ceiling clamp is the option without the spring
Suspension clamp Plastic clamp for 4 wire 3 circuit track, 0.3 kg How it pairs with the kit you chose

Match the Kit to the Rail

A suspension kit has to suit the rail, so confirm the rail first, whether it is a 1-circuit or 3 circuit track lighting system.

Most of the CLA Lighting kits above are listed for 4 wire 3 circuit track. Order the kit, rail and connectors against the same circuit type, because a kit listed for one type will not necessarily suit the other. If you are hanging both rail types on one job, a 1.2m Haneco kit is listed for single and three circuit 240V runs, so it is worth a look.

Pendant Heads on a Hung Run

Pendant track lighting changes the height maths. The Moon 6-9W tri-colour track pendant in opal is listed with a 1.5m cable length, so add the pendant drop to the track drop to get the real lamp height.

The Moon listing gives switchable 6W or 9W power, selectable 3000K, 4000K and 5000K, and dimming with suitable dimmers. It is IP20, so it is an indoor fitting, and the listing refers to connecting it to a 3 circuit track system. Besides opal, the range is listed with spot, tube and flood fascias.

Open ceilings often carry hanging outlets as well as lights, and our guide to wiring a pendant socket outlet covers the amps and terminals.

Fit the Heads Once the Track Is Hung

Once the track is hung, choosing commercial track lighting heads by wattage, beam angle and dimming is the last big decision.

Hanging the track also changes the distance to the surface you are lighting, so check beam angle against the new height rather than the old ceiling line. Check too that each head is listed for the circuit type of your rail.

Check Fixings, Weight and Supply Before You Hang It

The listings give a weight for each part: 0.5 kg for the CLA Lighting cable kit, 1.0 kg for the ceiling kit with spring and 0.3 kg for the suspension clamp. Add those to the rail and the heads, then confirm the fixing point can carry the total.

Mark where power will enter the run before you mark the drop points, so the supply and the drops are planned together. The listings for these kits recommend installation by a qualified electrician.

Common Mistakes When Hanging Track

Ordering the kit before the rail. It happens when the mounting is picked from the ceiling plan alone. Kits are listed by circuit type, so a mismatch means a second order and a delay on site. Confirm the rail first, then order the kit to suit it.

Forgetting the pendant drop. It happens when the track height is measured but the 1.5m pendant cable is not. The lamps then hang lower than planned. Add the track drop and the pendant drop together before you set the height.

Hanging off a fixing nobody checked. It happens when weight is judged by eye. Rail, kits and heads add up, and a weak fixing is hard to fix once the heads are on. Add up the listed weights and check the fixing point first.

Choosing beam angle for the old ceiling height. It happens when the heads are picked from the original plan. Once the track hangs lower, the lit area changes. Check the beam angle against the new mounting height.

Trade tip: Hang one drop and one rail length first, then check height and level before you cut and fit the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

Mounting Options

What is the difference between a cable and a rod track suspension kit?

A cable kit hangs the rail on cable drops, while a rod kit gives a fixed drop instead of cables. For a rod option, this 1m steel rod kit from Domus Lighting is listed for 3 circuit track.

Can I hang single circuit track from a suspension kit?

Check the listing for each kit, because the CLA Lighting kits above are listed for 4 wire 3 circuit track. The Haneco 1.2m suspension kit is listed for single and three circuit 240V track runs.

Pendant Heads

Can you put pendant lights on a track?

Yes, where the pendant is made for track. The Moon track pendant is listed for connection to a 3 circuit track system, so confirm the pendant suits your rail before you order.

How long is the cable on a track pendant light?

The Moon pendant is listed with a 1.5m cable length, in opal, spot, tube or flood fascias. This Moon pendant with a flood fascia is one example.

Licensing and Compliance

Do I need a licensed electrician to hang and connect track lighting in Australia?

Connecting track to fixed 240V wiring is generally licensed electrical work, and the listings for these kits recommend installation by a qualified electrician. Rules vary by state and territory, so confirm with your local regulator for the specific job.

Do suspension kits need to comply with AS/NZS 3000?

AS/NZS 3000 is the Wiring Rules for the electrical installation. The CLA Lighting cable kit, ceiling kit and suspension clamp, and the Haneco kit, are listed as complying with it, and the Moon pendant lists AS/NZS 60598. The electrician connecting the run is responsible for an installation that meets the rules, so check approvals on each product page.
