Halfway through a shopfit, the first head will not seat in the rail. The run was hung as 1-circuit, but the adaptors in the box are 3-circuit, and the whole order is already on site. This guide shows how to match the rail, adaptor, connectors and live end for 3 circuit track lighting before you order, and where 1-circuit parts differ.
Everything else on the job follows the rail. A 1-circuit track is a 3-wire system, so every head on the run is switched or dimmed together. A 3-circuit track is a 4-wire system, and a 3-circuit run typically lets you control groups of heads separately from the same rail.
Both types are available in 1m lengths. The CLA Lighting 3-circuit track in black is listed at 220-240V / 16A as a 4 wire 3 circuit rail. On the 1-circuit side, the SAL 1 circuit track is listed at 240V with 10A total track capacity.
| Check | 1-circuit track | 3-circuit track |
|---|---|---|
| Wiring | 3-wire | 4-wire |
| Control | All heads switched or dimmed together | Groups of heads can typically be switched or dimmed separately |
| Listed rating (examples) | 240V, 10A total track capacity (SAL) | 220-240V / 16A (CLA Lighting) |
| Adaptor | 3-wire track adaptor | 3 circuit 4 wire track adaptor |
Three circuit track lighting and 1 circuit track lighting each use their own adaptors, connectors and live ends, so a mixed order is an easy way to end up with parts that do not fit.

The adaptor clips into the rail and carries the head, so it has to suit the circuit type. The 3 circuit 4 wire track adaptor from CLA Lighting is listed for 4 wire 3 circuit track, holds up to 10kg and uses a screw terminal for the wire connection. A 1-circuit run uses a 3-wire adaptor instead, like this round 3-wire track adaptor.
Holding weights are listed per adaptor, and they differ between listings. The CLA 3-circuit adaptor lists 10kg, while the SAL 1-circuit rail lists a maximum of 2kg per adaptor. Check the figure against the weight of the head before you order.
Straight runs, corners and branches each need a different track lighting connector. Where two lengths meet in a line, a 3 circuit track I connector joins them. A 3 circuit track L connector carries the rail around a corner, and a T connector is used where a second run branches off. These are listed for 3-circuit track, so confirm the circuit type on the listing for the rail you have before you order.
Power has to enter the run somewhere. A track lighting live end connector joins the rail to the supply, and the 3 circuit track live end is listed as joining and powering track lighting circuits. That one is the left-hand version, and live ends are made in left and right versions, so work out which side the supply arrives from before you order.
Finish the open end of the run with a 3 circuit track end cap. The 1-circuit range has its own end cap, so match that to the rail as well. The CLA rail listing mentions an end cap and live end in its features, so confirm what ships with each rail length before you add extras.
The listed rating is the limit for the whole run, so add up the head wattages before you decide how many heads one length of track will carry. The breaker protecting the track circuit should suit that rating and the supply cable, and our guide to choosing the right Lanx MCB rating covers the basics.
The same thinking applies to the switch on the run, so the switch amp rating guide is worth a look. If you plan to dim several heads on one circuit, flicker is where problems tend to show up first, and fixing LED dimmer flicker is easier to plan for before the heads go up.
On long runs or high ceilings, suspended track lighting with cable or rod drops often replaces surface mounting. Suspension kits are listed by circuit type, so confirm the kit suits your rail before you order.
Once the rail and circuit type are settled, the next decision is the heads, and commercial track lighting heads vary a lot by wattage, beam and dimming. Check that each head is listed for your circuit type or adaptor before it goes on the order.
Ordering 1-circuit and 3-circuit parts together. It happens when rail, adaptors and connectors are picked from different jobs or different listings. The adaptor may not suit the rail, and the fix is a second delivery. Check the circuit type on every line of the order before you submit it.
Ordering the live end for the wrong side. Live ends are made left and right, and the black left live end is only one of them. Mark on the plan which side the supply arrives from, then order to match.
Assuming every adaptor carries the same weight. Listed holding weights differ, from 10kg on the CLA 3-circuit adaptor to 2kg per adaptor on the SAL 1-circuit rail. A heavy head on a lightly rated adaptor can cause trouble later, so check the weight on the listing.
Leaving the open end of the run unfinished. The last rail length needs an end cap, and it is easy to forget when the order is built around rail and adaptors. Add it to the order with the rail.
Skipping the breaker and switch check. Adding a longer run to an existing circuit without checking the breaker and the switch can leave you reworking it after the heads are up. Check the listed rating first.
Trade tip: Before ordering for a whole job, draw the run and count every rail length, connector, live end, end cap and adaptor, then check each line against the circuit type. Fitting one rail length with an adaptor and live end first lets you test the fit on site.
What is the difference between 1 circuit and 3 circuit track lighting?
A 1-circuit track is a 3-wire system and all the heads on the run are switched together. A 3-circuit track is a 4-wire system and typically lets you split the heads into separate groups. For a 3-circuit run in 1m lengths, one option is this 4 wire 240V 1m rail from Domus Lighting.
Can I put a 3 circuit adaptor on a 1 circuit rail?
Not unless the listing says so. The CLA 3-circuit adaptor is listed for 4 wire 3 circuit track, and 1-circuit track uses a 3-wire adaptor, so they are not interchangeable by default. Check the listing for both the rail and the adaptor.
What connector do I need to branch off a 3 circuit track?
A T connector is used where a second run branches off the first. T connectors are listed with a left or right orientation, so check which way the branch needs to go. This T connector in black, left inner is one option.
Where does power enter a 3 circuit track?
At a live end, which joins the rail to the supply and normally sits at the end of the run. If the supply is better placed in the middle, a centre feed live joiner feeds power in at the middle of the run instead of the end.
Do I need a licensed electrician to install track lighting in Australia?
Connecting track to fixed 240V wiring is generally licensed electrical work, and the listings for these rails recommend installation by a qualified electrician. Rules vary by state and territory, so confirm with your local regulator for the specific job.
Does 3 circuit track need to comply with AS/NZS 3000?
AS/NZS 3000 is the Wiring Rules for the electrical installation. The listings for these rails and fittings reference it, and the electrician connecting the run is responsible for an installation that meets it. Check the approvals and compliance details on each product page.
